In partnership with the Born Free Foundation, Shamwari’s Big Cat Rescue and Education Centres highlight the plight of wild cats in captivity. Founded by actress Virginia McKenna and her late husband Bill Travers, Born Free’s mission is to ‘Keep Wildlife in the Wild.’ The centres provide a sanctuary for rescued lions and leopards while educating visitors on conservation. Born Free, a UK-based charity, protects threatened species and works with communities to promote coexistence between people and wildlife. Since 1984, it has gained global support from conservationists, celebrities, and institutions like Shamwari Private Game Reserve.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is dedicated to wildlife conservation, including the rescue and rehabilitation of injured, orphaned, or sick animals through the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Under expert veterinary care, animals are nursed back to health and released into their natural habitat. Guests staying at Shamwari can visit the centre to learn more about these vital efforts.

Shamwari has partnered with VulPro, Africa’s leading vulture conservation organization, to combat the severe decline of vulture populations. VulPro @ Shamwari supports both in-situ and ex-situ conservation efforts, ensuring sustainability while reducing risk by diversifying breeding locations. With strong security from Shamwari’s anti-poaching unit, the facility provides a safe ecosystem for these vital birds. Guests can visit VulPro, located next to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, to learn more about vulture conservation.

In addition to spectacular game drives, Shamwari Game Reserve also offers professionally guided walking tours. Here, you can gain a true perspective of the flora and fauna indigenous to the region. Your guide can point out animal tracks, dung, hiding spots, rare birds and educate you on the area and its history. Unfortunately, no children under the age of 16 or adults over the age of 65 (unless provided with a doctor’s certificate of fitness) are permitted on these walks.

This malaria-free region of the Eastern Cape is home to diverse wildlife, including the Big 5 and a rich variety of bird species.
