Game Drives
Sasaab is set in a region of remarkable biodiversity, home to abundant wildlife, from majestic elephant herds to lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Samburu is also a paradise for bird enthusiasts, boasting an exceptional variety of species. This part of Kenya is renowned for the ‘Samburu Special Five’—the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich—found only in northern Kenya. Game drives explore two key areas: Westgate Conservancy, where Sasaab is located, and the nearby Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves.
Helicopter Excursions
Discover northern Kenya’s remote wilderness from the sky for an unforgettable adventure. With a helicopter based at Sasaab for part of the year through our partners at Tropic Air, guests can embark on tailor-made excursions to some of the country’s most secluded destinations. Whether seeking breathtaking aerial photography, ancient rock art, fossil exploration, or soaring over mountain peaks, each heli adventure is designed to match your interests—offering unparalleled views and extraordinary experiences.
Fly Camping
For adventurous travelers, a mobile camp experience offers the chance to sleep under the stars and fully immerse in the wild.
Camel Rides
Sasaab’s five resident camels offer a unique way to explore the landscape. Enjoy a leisurely late-afternoon ride along the river, ending at a scenic sundowner spot.
Nature and Bird Walks
Take a break from the vehicle and explore on foot, appreciating the flora, birdlife, and smaller wildlife. Enjoy morning bird walks, afternoon sundowners, or even a riverside run.
Spa Treatments
Nestled in the 4C Centre near the lodge entrance, two serene spa rooms offer rejuvenating massages and beauty treatments. Inspired by the Samburu word for frankincense, Sasaab incorporates the healing essence of locally sourced Boswellia resin into its spa experiences.
Swimming Pools
Alongside private plunge pools in each room, the lodge features two swimming pools: a breathtaking infinity pool overlooking the river and a lap pool by the outdoor gym at the 4C Centre, ideal for swimming lengths.
Outdoor Gym
Sasaab's well-equipped outdoor gym offers scenic views and a lap pool for swimming lengths, perfect for building an appetite for the lodge’s delicious cuisine. Both are located at the 4C Centre, near the main lodge entrance.
Sundowner Rock
Sundowner Rock in Westgate Conservancy is a legendary spot, offering breathtaking panoramic views that stretch endlessly. Climb the giant boulders and be awed by the scenery—this sundowner experience is sure to leave a lasting memory.
Quad Biking
For adrenaline enthusiasts, we offer four quad bikes to explore Westgate Conservancy at your own pace. For the ultimate adventure, we can tailor a quad bike excursion with an overnight fly-camping experience. Additional costs may apply.
Market Day
Immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of an authentic Samburu market. From bleating livestock to household items and intricate beaded jewelry, the local Samburu people gather here to trade, sell, and buy a variety of goods.
Samburu Manyatta Visit
A ‘manyatta’ is a traditional Samburu (or Maasai) settlement, consisting of huts within a fenced compound. For those interested, we can arrange a visit to a neighboring village, offering a fascinating insight into the Samburu culture and their survival in this arid, rugged environment.
Samburu Cultural Experience
During your stay, we may be able to organize a special cultural experience with the local community, allowing guests to watch and even participate in traditional activities. The Samburu follow a way of life and elaborate rituals that align with the rains, with traditions unchanged for centuries. During the dry season, women pray for rain to bless the earth. When the rains come, accompanied by warriors returning with cattle, the moran (warriors) and women engage in vibrant dances and celebrations. At Sasaab, we respect this natural rhythm, and guests sometimes have the opportunity to join in these festivities. Witnessing a traditional dance is a truly sensory experience and often a highlight of a stay.
Community Project Visit
Sasaab actively supports a range of health and education initiatives in the local Samburu communities, from equipping school libraries to providing clean water through boreholes and constructing classrooms. Guests are welcome to visit a nearby primary school that we support, where they can meet the children and teachers.
The 4C Center
Explore the 4C Centre at Sasaab, a hub for cultural discovery and sustainability. The 4Cs—Conservation, Community, Culture, and Commerce—are the pillars of our Global Ecosphere Retreat® (GER®) accreditation. Through our exhibition rooms, guests can immerse themselves in Samburu culture, the region’s geology, and our harmonious coexistence with communities, wildlife, and landscapes.
For Children
In addition to exciting game drives, camel adventures, quad biking, and pool time, Sasaab offers plenty to delight younger guests. Children can spend time with one of our friendly Samburu warriors, who will guide them on a nature trail designed just for little ones. They’ll learn how to make a traditional Samburu bow and arrow and even create a toothbrush from the Samburu toothbrush tree (hold off on the toothpaste and floss for now!).
Get Arty on Safari
Each room is equipped with a watercolor set and artist pad, allowing guests to unleash their creativity during their stay. Immerse yourself in Sasaab’s stunning surroundings and capture the unique scenery and wildlife through your own artistic lens.
