Volcanoes National Park Travel Guide
Hike through ancient rainforests in search of endangered mountain gorillas
The towering peaks and lush rainforests.
Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda form a mountainous barrier separating three countries – Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo
These serve as a haven for one of the world’s most endangered species, the mountain gorilla.
Trekking to see endangered mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) is a bucket-list item for many travellers to Africa, and this lush national park is among the best places in Africa to enjoy this unforgettable wildlife experience. The park is home to 12 habituated gorilla families, which can be visited on treks led by expert local trackers and guides.
Gorilla treks depart early in the morning, with travelers hiking for up to four hours at altitudes between 2500 to 4000 metres (8200 to 13 000 feet) in search of a gorilla family in the forest. Once a family is found, you’ll spend up to 60 minutes in their company, observing them feeding, grooming, and interacting. These primates are naturally curious, leading to unforgettable close-up encounters! In addition to gorillas, the forests are also home to rare golden monkeys and a wonderful diversity of birdlife. Only 96 permits for gorilla trekking are issued each day, so advance booking is essential. The steep terrain and length means trekking can be strenuous, and a good level of fitness is required.
For a deeper discovery of gorilla conservation in Rwanda, pay a visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund to discover 60 years of gorilla research in the region, and how you can contribute to conserving these remarkable primates who share 98% of our DNA.
Few restaurants are available in this remote corner of Rwanda, so expect to enjoy all of your meals in your chosen lodge. Africa By Design partners with some of the most respected luxury safari lodges in East Africa, so you can look forward to a memorable dining experience fusing traditional Rwandan dishes with global fare. Most dietary requirements and preferences can be catered for. Please provide further details on reservation.
There is no dress code to worry about during your time at the lodge, but we recommend dressing in layers to accommodate the cool mornings and evenings. Rain jackets are essential year-round, as mountain weather can be unpredictable. For your gorilla trek, wear sturdy hiking boots, long hiking pants, and moisture-wicking clothing. Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather throughout the day. Lodges will provide gaiters, walking sticks, and other necessary equipment.
Gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year but is best during the dry season from June to September. Forest trails can be especially challenging during the two rainy seasons (March to May, and September to November). However, gorilla trekking permits are 30% discounted from November to May, and treks during the first rainy season (March to May) offer a higher chance of observing chimpanzees feeding on the ground.
Due to the high altitude, the risk of contracting malaria in Volcanoes National Park is very low. However, since most travellers transit through other parts of Rwanda, malaria medication is recommended. Consult your travel doctor at least three weeks before departure.
