Lake Manyara National Park Travel Guide

A compact park with remarkable biodiversity and dramatic landscapes

Though often overlooked in favour of more famous parks to the north, Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and accessible safari destinations and a hotspot for birdwatchers.

Located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment and just a 90-minute drive from the international airport in Arusha,

this relatively small park is renowned for its ecological diversity and rewarding wildlife sightings, making it a compelling stop for travellers.

From the namesake soda lake that attracts thousands of flamingos to the dense groundwater forests and open grassy floodplains, Lake Manyara offers an exceptional safari experience, often serving as a prelude to longer itineraries through Tanzania’s northern circuit.

Despite the park’s modest size, wildlife viewing can be exceptional. Herds of elephants and buffalo roam the floodplains, while the forested valleys are home to troops of olive baboons and blue monkeys. The park is perhaps best known for its tree-climbing lions – a rare behaviour seen in only a few places across Africa – and its birdlife, with over 400 recorded species, including pelicans, storks, and flocks of flamingos that set the shores of the alkaline lake alive with colour. While game drives are the most common activity, guided walks and community visits to nearby Mto wa Mbu offer insight into local culture, while the unique treetop canopy walk provides a new perspective on the forest ecosystem.

As is common across Tanzania’s national parks, most meals are enjoyed at your chosen safari lodge or camp. Look forward to memorable culinary experiences, often featuring seasonal produce and local influences blended with global flavours. Dietary requirements and preferences can be accommodated; please advise at the time of reservation.

Dress comfortably and practically. Neutral tones are ideal for blending in on game drives. Pack lightweight clothing for warm days, but don’t forget a fleece or jacket for cooler mornings and evenings. Closed shoes are essential for walks. Other essentials include a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera, and binoculars. Most lodges provide toiletries and laundry services, but make sure to carry any prescription medications and personal items.

The best wildlife viewing occurs during the dry season, from June to October, when vegetation is sparse and animals are easier to spot. The green season, from November to May, brings lush scenery and excellent birdwatching opportunities. Rain showers during this time are usually short and intense, but they can render some areas temporarily inaccessible.

The park is located in an area where malaria is common. Travellers are advised to take prophylactic medication and apply insect repellent, especially in the early morning and evening, to avoid being bitten. Consult your travel doctor at least three weeks before your departure.

Lake Manyara is easily accessible by road from Arusha, taking approximately 90 minutes, or through scheduled flights to the nearby Lake Manyara Airstrip, which serves as a gateway to Ngorongoro and Tarangire. The road conditions are generally good, and private transfers can be arranged.
