Nairobi Travel Guide

The gateway to Kenya’s unforgettable safari destinations

Nairobi is the gateway to East Africa, and while some travellers only pass through on their way to safari destinations further afield, this vibrant capital is well worth exploring.

Bookend your wilderness experience with a few days soaking up the urban energy, rich history, and myriad attractions of ‘The Green City in the Sun’.

Explore the colonial history of Kenya at the Karen Blixen Museum, located in the former home of the ‘Out of Africa’ author. The house has been preserved in its original condition, and the rooms are adorned with a mix of original décor and props from the 1985 film. The tropical gardens, which offer views of the Ngong Hills, are worth exploring. Guided tours of the museum are also available.

For a dose of Kenyan culture, stop in at the Maasai Market for handcrafted jewellery, textiles, and artwork. Kazuri Beads celebrates Kenyan craftsmanship with striking jewellery made from eco-friendly clay sourced near Mount Kenya. To explore more contemporary creativity, dive into Nairobi’s vibrant arts scene at the Nairobi Gallery and Banana Hill Art Gallery.

Don’t miss a trip to Nairobi National Park. Established in 1945, this well-maintained reserve is located right at the capital’s doorstep and offers an ‘express safari’ for travellers short on time. It’s also home to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where you can meet and adopt orphaned elephants. The Giraffe Centre nearby is also worth a visit to learn about their work in driving giraffe conservation.

Nairobi boasts a vibrant culinary scene. Cultiva is known for its farm-to-table philosophy and offers a modern take on sustainable dining. Sierra Brasserie pairs craft beers with diverse cuisine, while Talisman combines colonial charm with East African elegance. For an authentic Kenyan experience, enjoy nyama choma (grilled meat) at The Carnivore, a legendary institution in Nairobi.

Nairobi’s climate is mild year-round, making light, breathable clothing ideal for sightseeing and exploring the city’s markets and cultural hubs. Wear neutral-colored clothing and a good pair of walking shoes when visiting Nairobi National Park. Evenings can be cool, so consider bringing a light jacket. For dining out at more formal restaurants and bars, smart-casual attire is recommended.

Nairobi has a temperate climate, marked by warm days and cool nights. The dry seasons, from January to March and July to October, offer the best weather for outdoor activities. Rainy seasons take place from April to May and November to December.

While Nairobi is situated at a high altitude and has a lower risk of malaria compared to other regions of Kenya, it is advisable to take precautions such as using insect repellent and sleeping under mosquito nets. If you intend to venture beyond the city into lower-altitude areas, consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis.
