South Africa Travel Guide
South Africa the gateway to Southern Africa
With convenient connections to Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique it’s not hard to see why this diverse country dubbed ‘The Rainbow Nation’ is the most popular tourism destination in Africa
In its private reserves and national parks South Africa offers (sorry Kenya, but it’s true) the best ‘Big Five’ safari experience Africa has to offer. Then there’s the vibrant urban energy of Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Understand South Africa’s complex history with a visit to Robben Island, or soak up the dramatic beauty of the Western Cape winelands. Perhaps travel to the secluded beaches and idyllic villages on the West Coast.
Heading east you’ll find the world-class golf courses and charming towns of the glorious Garden Route. Discover rich African culture and history in KwaZulu-Natal, or marvel at the rugged peaks of the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. It’s just one of the 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in this colourful, cosmopolitan destination that captures the joyful energy and unforgettable beauty of Africa.
South Africa is, simply, the best of a continent in one country.
Top Reasons To Visit South Africa
Big Five Safaris
South Africa offers the finest year-round safari experience in Africa, with luxury lodges scattered across both the vast national parks and exclusive private reserves. A new wave of upmarket safari lodges in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces offer malaria-free travel options.
Cape Town
It’s impossible not to fall in love with the ‘Mother City’, the oldest settlement in South Africa and the most popular urban atraction in Africa, regularly voted one of the world’s most popular cities. The Atlantic Ocean surrounds the city on three sides, offering white-sand beaches, scenic drives and marine adventure. Table Mountain dominates the city skyline, the famous cable car whisking sightseers to the summit in minutes. In the mountain’s shadow you’ll find a modern and vibrant city centre brimming with galleries and boutiques, restaurants and theatres; sparking easy comparisons to San Francisco and Melbourne. Discover the vibrant V&A Waterfront precinct, or lap up the luxury at the city’s array of iconic five-star hotels. With its Mediterranean climate Cape Town is a fantastic year-round destination, with warm summers and mild winters.
Adventure & Adrenalin
From surfing to paragliding to cage-diving with Great White sharks, inject a few thrills into your African adventure. On the Garden Route you’ll also find the world’s highest commercial bungy-jump, a scream-worthy 236-yard plummet off the Bloukrans bridge!
Fine Wine
Discover the remarkable wines being crafted on the historic estates of the Western Cape winelands. Look forward to expert tastings hosted in atmospheric cellars, and the rare opportunity to meet the winemakers themselves. South Africa may fall into the ‘New World’ of wine, but its winemaking heritage dates all the way back to 1659. That’s 110 years before the first vines were planted in California!
Urban Energy
Add to your safari adventure with a discovery of South Africa’s colourful cities, where you’ll find First World infrastructure crossed with vibrant African energy. South Africa’s modern international airports also offer easy access to neighbouring countries in southern Africa, for you to discover Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. In Johannesburg cycle with a local guide through the historic township of Soweto – Nelson Mandela once lived here – or immerse yourself in the heartbreak and history of the Apartheid Museum. In Durban wander the world-class seafront promenade infused with Zulu culture, and discover the lively Indian heritage of this beautiful coastal city.
Natural Beauty
Where to begin? The beautiful beaches that stretch for thousands of kilometres along South Africa’s coastline? The stark beauty of the semi-desert Karoo? The endemic fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom surrounding Cape Town? Towering mountain peaks in the Cape and KwaZulu-Natal? The picture-postcard beauty of a blood-red sunset over the African bush? Why not seek them all?
Remarkable History
Discover South Africa’s history, both recent and ancient, for fascinating insights into the cultural and economic powerhouse of Africa. An hour’s drive from Johannesburg the ‘Cradle of Humankind – home to significant fossil discoveries such as ‘Mrs Ples’ and ‘Little Foot’ – is a journey back to the earliest origins of humankind. Or visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for nearly two decades, to understand the political upheaval that shaped South Africa at the fall of apartheid.
South Africa is truly a year-round destination. In the southern hemisphere, summer months are December to March, with winter from June to September, but weather conditions vary dramatically in different regions of the country.
Cape Town and the Western Cape enjoy a Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers followed by cool winters. Here summer and spring offer the best weather for enjoying the beaches and winelands.
Inland, in Johannesburg and in the eastern province of Mpumalanga – where most Big Five game reserves are situated – winters are cold and dry. This season offers excellent game viewing, with wildlife congregating at the waterholes. Summer days are hot, and punctuated by dramatic thunderstorms.
The average daily temperature in summer is around 25°C (77°F) but can increase to 35°C (95°F), and in winter around 15°C (59°F) daily, with significantly cooler mornings and evenings, which can get icy.

South Africa’s currency is the ‘Rand’, with one Rand (R) divided into 100 cents (c).
ATMs are widely available in major cities, and operate 24 hours a day. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most merchants. American Express and Diners Club are less commonly used, and may incur a surcharge.
Note that prices in shops will already include Value Added Tax (VAT), with no additional tax added at the checkout.
Tipping in bars and restaurants is optional, but generally expected unless the service is poor. For good service, a gratuity between 10-15% is acceptable. Safari lodges will offer individual advice on gratuities for guides, trackers and housekeeping.
Mobile payment apps – Snapscan and Zapper are the most popular locally – are useful, particularly in major cities.
South Africa operates on a 230V (50Hz) electrical system. For travellers from Europe, Australia and most of Asia this rarely poses a problem, but it is considerably higher voltage than the 110V used in the United States. Confirm that your appliances are multi-voltage before departure, or consider bringing an adapter/converter.
South Africa makes use of both Type C 2-prong plugs, which have two round pins, and Plug Type D, which has three round pins in a triangular pattern. Most hotels will be able to provide plug adapters, if needed.
While crime remains a concern for many South Africans, the reality is that tourists are rarely affected. Avoid being the victim of urban petty crime by following a few common sense guidelines.
- As with any global city be vigilant when walking, particularly at night. Stick to busy, well-lit areas and ask your local guide or concierge for advice on suggested routes.
- Avoid carrying valuables or large sums of cash on your person, and keep a close watch on personal belongings (handbags, cameras etc), particularly in crowded public spaces.
- Safe public transport is limited in South African cities. Rather use Uber, or ask your local guide/hotel concierge to arrange a pre-booked transfer.
For a taste of all that South Africa has to offer, Africa by Design recommends a minimum of seven nights in-country. If time and budget allow, 10-14 days will allow for a more complete discovery of this remarkable destination.
Travellers from the United States, European Union, United Kingdom and numerous Asian countries do not require a visa to visit South Africa on holiday for up to 90 days. Click here to confirm if you require a visa.
Your passport or travel document should be valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of your intended visit and must have at least one unused page for entry/departure endorsements. Failure to comply may result in entry to the country being denied.
No inoculations are required to enter South Africa, although travellers arriving from a Yellow Fever region must produce a certificate of prior vaccination on arrival.
Wi-Fi Internet access is available in almost all hotels and lodges, as well as many restaurants and attractions, typically at no charge. Mobile connectivity can be easily purchased on arrival (ID required), but remember that coverage is often limited in remote areas.
